What is ASD and how effective is
ABA Therapy?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, also simply termed autism) is a persistent developmental disorder, characterised by symptoms evident from early childhood [1]. These symptoms include difficulty in social interaction, restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour and impaired communication skills. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 54 children have been identified with ASD in 2020 [2].
In a 1987 study, Ivar O. Lovaas compared the results of a control group to that of young children with autism who received Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy [3]. Results indicated that with 40 hours of ABA therapy a week for several years, 90% of participants substantially improved, some even to normal intellectual functioning compared to the control group [4].

More than just therapy "There are many layers and elements that take part when we help teach a child. We work closely with the family and educators to devise a treatment plan that improves the child's socially significant behaviours. There are times where we inevitably take a few steps back which can be disheartening, however, there is nothing more rewarding than when we see a breakthrough or see the child progressing. This fuels me to keep going!" - Anna Chung |
